OSCAR D'LEON
Asy Soy...
Sony Discos 95439
The giant's back, and his new record's filled with fine touches,
from the charanga violin section, deepened by what sounds like a cello,
on the opening track, to complicated rhythm arrangements. As usual, his
vocal sound identifies him ASAP, and the material has an old-school grace.
Here's music that doesn't segregate by generation or gender. There's a ballad or
two, including a harp. But the backbone of the album is made up of straight-up salsa.
Like I said: old school, and nice to hear.

D'LEON La Formula Original / The
Original Formula
US RMMM82268
A genuine Latin music legend - possibly the most
recognized Venezuelan artist outside his own
country (having performed at Madison Square
Garden, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the
Hollywood Bowl) - Oscar D'Leon's
latest recording is a fantastic display of his
traditional sound.
Featuring 10 swinging cuts, the set was produced
by D'Leon himself, who also composed 3 of the
songs. The great Isidro Infante also
worked closely with D'Leon on 2 superb tunes.
